External and Internal Renovation
Planning
The practice has been commissioned to prepare design proposals for the external and internal renovation of an early 19C Saw Mill, situated within the heart of the Bridlington Quay Conservation Area.
Originally the mill was built as a flour mill, half the size of the existing building. At that point, the flour mill was one of a series of six corn mills that were located along Bridlington’s Gypsy Race, as it meanders towards the sea.
As the requirement for corn milling in Bridlington dwindled, the mill pond that served the mill was built over and the mill was extended and converted into a working saw mill. As times changed again, the mill ceased to function industrially and was used in later years for retail and leisure purposes. So, whilst the mill is not a Listed heritage asset, the building has a rich history, functioning actively and flexibly as part of the fabric and development of the town.
The proposed contemporary development at the mill includes the sensitive repair and renovation of the exterior of the building, and the alteration of the interior of the building so that it can continue to provide for a number of flexible uses including charity office space, private exhibition, function and gathering spaces.
The redeveloped Mill building will also positively contribute to the broader urban redevelopment of Saw Mill Yard, which is proposed to become a new public space and thoroughfare, as part of the Beck Hill Car Park development.
